It is not cheap, I started 12 years ago with TurboCAD at $400 and now it is a $1,700 product but I no longer have to purchase an external file converters (they also have RESDK and LightWorks GPU support which adds $$ to the cost).ĭon't use a Crescent Wrench for a hammer, while you can get the job done it takes more effort and looks like crap.If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act ("CCPA") provides you with the right to opt out of the 'sale' of your Personal Information. TurboCAD and other CAD companies pay third party companies for their conversion software. I use Inkscape and GIMP (Stopped feeding Adobe a long time ago) but as I noted they are general drawing programs, EDA application are generally designed for standards and interchange. I found, too, that the center of the Inkscape shape must be at 0, 0 - not the center of the page as when exported from CorelDraw. This takes care of the issue and I can stay stay inside Inkscape. As an experiment, I went back into Inkscape, selected all the segments, and then used the Add Nodes extension and increased the number of nodes by a factor of 10. I noticed that there was a file size difference between the Inkscape DXF output and CorelDraw DXF output. When I imported the same DXF into CorelDraw it looked great, so I re-exported it from CorelDraw, imported that file into Diptrace, and it looked great. I exported the shape from Inkscape and then imported into Diptrace and it looked very chunky. My preference, though, would be the use of Inkcsape for odd board shapes like this because I am comfortable with it and use it day-to-dat. The square outline is the board outline added so that I could penalize the board for printing to the transfer paper. Before I stumbled on fixing and re-exporting with CorelDraw I had been using online conversion services but was getting less-than-desirable results.įor this PCB I actually imported the board outline (circle with nodes) to the copper layer so that I could control the line width. ![]() With home/shop etched boards, they they are manually ground to shape so we need an accurate guide. I always center my PCB designs on 0, 0 so centering the drawing in the DXF document makes things clean.ĭoing this gives me clean curves (actually, a lot of small segments) that look good. Note that the position of the drawing in the DXF document affects the position where it will be imported to in Diptrace. When I have needed support, they have been fantastic.Ģ) Clean and center PCB shape in document ![]() ![]() I use the PCB-Fab-In-A-Box system from Pulsar Pro to make my quick PCBs (. It's a tiny bit convoluted, but I found a solution - I used this to create the PCB in the attached image in a couple hours (DXF to layout to etched in my kitchen and ready for soldering). I've had two emergency projects in the last week and struggled because Diptrace didn't like the DXF files I was getting from the FX shop. What typically happens is I get a DXF file from an FX engineer that specifies the PCB shape and where he needs parts (usually LEDs). I work in the film and TV business, and often have to produce PCBs in a hurry. ![]()
